OPEN STANCE OR CLOSED STANCE?

Updated: Nov 17, 2021

Conventional swings setup relatively square parallel left to the target. That's a given. But if all of us start off square and 90% (probably more) still slice the ball. And yet all 3 of the arguably best ball strikers of all time did NOT SET UP SQUARE.

First example: Moe Norman. The Canadian pro was the striker whom other pros would watch. He setup SLIGHTLY CLOSED and utilized what is now known as a single-plane swing. By all accounts his ball would push slightly right and stay stick straight. Known to have shot several 59s in his career. Awed many with his driving but was a terrific wedge player by all accounts.

Second example: Ben Hogan. The Texas icon setup closed with a weak grip, cupped wrist and bullet low fades with a CLOSED STANCE. Notorious hard worker but he enjoyed every drop of sweat-equity he earned. Posting on his front leg at the top of the swing...he had a secret(for scoring) but he was very transparent with his historic Five Lessons, many have read it few have been able to demonstrate it.

Third example: Lee Trevino. The SuperMex or the Merry Mex burst onto the golf world with a home-made swing built around a strong grip, OPEN STANCE, and low burning wedges to compete against much longer off the tee competitors. His push-fades were dead straight by the time he went from a self admitted "hooker"(fought the ball that had a quick over-draw) to a reliable fader of the ball. His back story is almost as remarkable as his accuracy.

Whichever way you do it, if it works, keep it. For me Trevino made sense but it may not for everyone.....and thats OK. - "Flea" Trevino.
