"I USE MY RIGHT HAND FOR EATING...NOT MUCH GOLFING"

Hola Amigos!

This picture and a few like it helped me unlock an additional 17 yards with my driver and about 11 yards per iron. Intrigued? It's something that tons of teacher's mention and its not that mysterious but without my little detail it may seem like something that's so esoteric it reserved for the talented teens at your club.

For those of you who have followed my little page for awhile it doesn't take long to notice that using Mr. Trevino's advice without further detail can prevent some obvious and not so obvious issues. This probably has to do with the limitations of technology and teaching at the time.

In a recent Taylormade video hosted by Chris Trott(fellow LT Fan btw) where Collin Morikawa and Tiger Woods were discussing how they hit iron shots. The best part was when "Trottie" asked Collin have you ever asked Tiger for advice? His answer was perfect...He doesnt because he wont be able to remember what TW would tell him and TW followed up with what he shares is what he thinks he does but he may not actually do it!(hint: TW said the old-timers he would ask questions of almost always didnt matchup to their feels/swing thoughts).

Long story short the biggest thing that got me so many additional yards was WIDTH. The title of this article is something Mr. Trevino would always tell his amateur partners....cause most of us (esp. higher handicaps) tend to have the grip pressure on scale of 1-10, 8 in the right hand and a 4 in the left. It's totally natural to do that.

Here's my two cents on it. Reverse that but also in order to retain a straighter left arm(your swing radius in simple terms) feel a push outward away from your body by having the pad of your right hand into the vee formed by your thumb and index of your gloved hand underneath. The fingertips and the grip of the right hand remains on a grip pressure as light as if "you were holding a Tiffany glass"(thats from his book).

The next topic will be related to why you shouldn't worry so much about lag. I reduced my lag doing this and went from 268 carry to 289 carry, with the strong grip and open stance(just the way I do it now, the grip and stance is up to you). Width is our friend. Lag should be like an acquaintance. It also helped me hit controlled flighted draws with wedges that dont overcook. Just be warned your wedges yardage will definitely increase with a centered strike-nice bonus....especially if you like me and Mr. Trevino and are a little closer to your work aka short.

Till next time amigos! What are your swing keys that got you more distance or consistency? Take care.
